Getting fit for a hike
A multi-day hike puts more strain on your legs, back and endurance than many people expect. If you prepare for a few months, the hike becomes a pleasure rather than a battle for survival.
You will need
- Hiking boots that are broken in
- A rucksack or backpack and weight for training
- A map app or step counter
- Time for 3–4 training sessions a week
Steps
Assess how demanding the hike is
Find out the daily distances, the elevation changes and the weight of your rucksack. On Lapland's fell trails, for example, a day can add up to 15–25 km over varied terrain.
