Controlling voles in your garden
Over the winter, voles can strip the bark from young fruit trees and eat flower bulbs and root vegetables. Control works best if you plan ahead in autumn, before the snow covers the ground.
You will need
- Tree guards or metal mesh (mesh size under 1 cm)
- Vole traps
- A spade and a wheelbarrow
- Work gloves
Steps
Identify the pest
Field voles and bank voles gnaw trunks under the snow, while water voles eat roots underground and make mounds of soil. A trunk stripped of bark in spring or a seedling that topples over with its roots missing are signs of voles.
Protect tree trunks in autumn
Clear vegetation around the trees
Plant bulbs in mesh
Tread down the snow around the trees
Use traps
Avoid poisons
