Children's water safety at the beach

A child can drown quickly and often silently, even in shallow water. Most accidents can be prevented with constant supervision, life jackets and clear rules. This guide explains how to make summer safe at the beach and at the summer cottage (mökki).

You will need

Steps

  1. Supervise constantly

Agree among the adults who is watching the children at any given time, and hand over clearly. The person supervising doesn't use their phone or read. A small child in the water is always within arm's reach.

  2. Put on life jackets

  3. Set clear rules

  4. Check the beach

  5. Make the cottage shore safe

  6. Teach swimming skills

  7. Take cold water into account

  8. Recognise a drowning person

  9. Act in an emergency
