Scrapping a car and the certificate of destruction

You must not leave an old car in your yard or in the forest; it has to be taken to an approved collection point. Scrapping it correctly frees you from vehicle tax and responsibility, and you get a certificate of destruction.

You will need

Steps

  1. Find a collection point

Find your nearest approved collection point for end-of-life vehicles, for example on the website of Finnish Car Recycling (Suomen Autokierrätys). Only an approved point can issue an official certificate of destruction.

  2. Check that the car is complete

  3. Empty the car

  4. Arrange transport

  5. Hand over the car

  6. Get the certificate of destruction

  7. Check the register

  8. Claim refunds
