Checking and storing your tyres
Tyres are a car's only contact with the road, and their condition affects braking distance and aquaplaning. Regular checks and proper storage extend the life of your tyres and save money.
You will need
- A tread depth gauge or a coin
- Chalk or tape for marking the tyres
- Tyre bags or a tyre rack
- A cool, dry storage place or a tyre hotel
Steps
Measure the tread depth
Measure the tread at several points across the width of the tyre. The legal limit is 1.6 mm for summer tyres and 3 mm for winter tyres, but safety deteriorates before you reach these limits.

Find out the tyre's age
Mark the positions
