Bleeding a radiator
When a radiator is cold at the top or makes a gurgling sound, there is often air inside it. In a detached house you can bleed it yourself, while in a block of flats it is often the maintenance company's job, so first find out which applies to you.
You will need
- A radiator bleed key (from a hardware shop)
- A small container or mug
- Kitchen paper or a cloth
- The pressure gauge reading if you have your own heating system
Steps
Find out who is responsible
In a block of flats or terraced house, ask the property manager or maintenance company whether residents may bleed radiators themselves. Maintenance often bleeds the radiators, because the pressure of the whole network has to be checked at the same time.
Identify an air problem
Open the thermostat
Get a container ready
Open the bleed screw
Close it when water comes out
Check the system pressure
Check that it warms up
