Removing tobacco and other odours from a home
An ingrained smell clings to walls, textiles and the ventilation, and covering it up with fragrances does not remove it. You get a lasting result when you find the source, wash the surfaces and make sure the ventilation works.
You will need
- A cleaning solution, e.g. pine soap (mäntysuopa) or an alkaline cleaner
- Sponges, cloths and a bucket
- A vacuum cleaner with a good filter
- Baking soda for textiles
- Insulating primer and paint if needed
Steps
Find the source of the smell
Find out whether the smell is coming from a particular room, a drain, a cupboard, a rug or the ventilation. A cellar-like or mouldy smell can indicate moisture damage, in which case contact the property manager or a building inspector.
Air effectively
Wash the textiles
Wash the walls and ceilings
Clean cupboards and floors
Clean the ventilation
Paint if necessary
