Cutting your sauna’s electricity use
In many Finnish homes, the electric sauna stove (kiuas) is one of the biggest electricity users, and heating it once can use several kilowatt-hours. You do not have to give up the sauna if you heat it wisely. This guide explains how to enjoy the sauna just as much with lower consumption.
You will need
- The stove’s manual and power rating
- A sauna thermometer
- A check of the sauna stones
- An electricity price app, if you have an exchange-priced contract
Steps
Find out the stove’s power
Check the power on the stove’s rating plate. At full power, a stove uses roughly its rated power every hour, for example a 6 kW stove uses about 6 kWh per hour.
Shorten the preheating
Lower the temperature
Take turns back to back
Replace the sauna stones
Use the cheap hours
Use the residual heat
