Switch to a cheaper electricity contract

Changing electricity supplier is free, and your power will not be cut off. The new supplier handles the switch for you. The most important thing is to compare the annual price, not just the price per kilowatt hour.

You will need

Steps

  1. Find out your annual consumption

Check your consumption in kilowatt hours (kWh) for the last 12 months on your latest electricity bill or on your network company's customer pages.

  2. Check your current contract

Is your contract open-ended or fixed-term? It is best to switch a fixed-term contract only when it ends, because early termination can cost money.

  3. Compare offers

Use the Energy Authority's impartial comparison service sahkonhinta.fi. Enter your annual consumption, and the service calculates the annual price of each contract.

  4. Calculate the annual price yourself

    Annual price = consumption × energy price + 12 × basic fee. For example, 2,000 kWh × €0.08 + 12 × €4 = €208 a year.

  5. Sign the contract on the new supplier's website

The new supplier terminates your old open-ended contract on your behalf. The switch usually takes about two weeks, and your network company stays the same.

  6. Save the confirmation

Keep the email confirmation. A contract made online usually has a 14-day right of withdrawal.

  7. Check your first bill

When the first bill from the new supplier arrives, check that the energy price and basic fee match the contract. Also check that you receive a final bill from your old supplier.
