Getting started with a sewing machine

A sewing machine can seem complicated at first, but you can learn the basic functions in one evening. Once the threading and tension are right, you can move on to mending and your own projects.

You will need

• A sewing machine and its user manual
• A universal needle and sewing thread
• Practice fabric, for example cotton
• Pins and scissors
• A tape measure

Steps

1. Get to know the machine

   Find the threading path, bobbin case, stitch selector and thread tension dial in the user manual. If the manual is missing, you can often find the manual for your model on the manufacturer's website.

2. Wind the bobbin

3. Thread the upper thread

4. Insert the bobbin

5. Practise a straight stitch

6. Backstitch at the start and end

7. Adjust the thread tension

8. Try zigzag
