Dressing your child for freezing weather
In the Finnish winter, the right clothing decides whether a child enjoys being outside or comes back in crying. Too little clothing exposes them to frostbite, while too much causes sweating and, through that, getting chilled. This guide explains layering and temperature limits.
You will need
- Base layers in wool or a technical material
- A fleece or wool mid-layer
- A windproof padded snowsuit or shell overall
- Mittens, a hat, a balaclava or a neck warmer
- Warm winter shoes or boots
Steps
Dress in three layers
Closest to the skin goes a wool or technical base layer, which moves moisture away from the skin. In the middle a warm fleece or wool layer, and on top a wind- and waterproof overall.
Avoid cotton next to the skin
Protect the head, hands and feet
Consider your child's age and movement
Protect the face
Check the temperature at the back of the neck
Recognise frostbite
Dry the gear every day
